This hobnail boot is a cast from a model, meticulously worked in copper by Sid Thomas, an engineer at Hawker Siddeley around 80 years ago. On the sole you can see the detailing of hobnails and a repair patch. Hobnail boots were mainly worn by Military (ammo boots) and grounds workers.
Hawker Siddeley was one of the United Kingdom's most important aviation concerns, producing numerous designs including the famous Hawker Hurricane fighter plane that, along with the Supermarine Spitfire, was Britain's front-line defence in the Battle of Britain.
Copper was an important element in aviation as it was malleable, could be stretched into complex shapes without breaking and was a good conductor of both heat and electricity.
