Mudmen were brightly glazed figurines of men, women, wise men and old sages, seated or standing, holding flutes, scrolls, pots, fish and other objects of mystical importance or sometimes fishing.
Mudmen are one of China's most famous folk arts, dating back over 1000 years, the name comes from the use of mudbank clay rather than refined porclain clays and originated in the Southern Dynasties circa 420. The face and hands were traditionally left unglazed retaining the colour of the mud clay.
This schollary looking gent stands 95mm tall, 40mm wide at base and weighs 50g of pure beeswax. He has a delightful scent of pure beeswax, even in his solid state.
